Carpet steam cleaning is a term commonly used by many people but the technical term is Hot Water Extraction. It is typically done by pre-spraying the carpets or upholstery with a detergent to help break down and loosen dirt and soil that is embedded in the carpet pile. Much like a washing machine for clothes, the process involves adding detergent to water then agitated when necessary with a CRB (counter rotating brush scrubber or a rotary scrubber) usually when heavily soiled.

After this, the detergent is rinsed out of the carpet fibres using very hot water (up to 95 degrees Celsius) in conjunction with a rinse agent to help neutralise the pH level to as close to 7 and the carpets soft and detergent free. Steam cleaning is the preferred method of cleaning carpets for the best possible clean and is recommended by all carpet manufacturers as the best method of cleaning carpets.

There are two types of machines that can be used to steam clean carpets.

1.Portable Extractor – An electricity powered machine that can be taken out of the vehicle and taken into complexes such as apartments with lift access and office buildings.

2.Truck/Van-mounted Extractor – A petrol-powered machine, mounted inside the vehicle as name suggests. These machines are the pinnacle of the industry and always the preferred machine to use when the vehicle can be parked near the area to be cleaned and have vacuum and solution hoses connected from the machine to the cleaning tool when cleaning. These machines produce far greater heat and vacuum (suction) which in turn results in a better clean and faster drying that using a portable machine.

Many of the cheaper carpet cleaners only use a portable machine whereas we will always use a van-mounted machine where possible.

Dry carpet cleaning or encapsulation cleaning, also known as low-moisture cleaning, is the method of utilising a rotary scrubber that uses pads to essentially “buff” the carpet fibres. A small amount of detergent is sprayed onto the carpet to loosen the soil and dirt, then it is buffed with no water to remove the dirt/soil by transferring them into the pads. Pads are changed as they soil.

The benefit of using a low-moisture cleaning process is that it dries faster (normally around 2 hours) compared to steam cleaning. Dry carpet cleaning is normally used when carpets are very lightly soiled and also where quick drying is required. We typically only use this process as above when absolutely required.

We normally use dry carpet cleaning to agitate the carpets when very badly soiled, then do the steam carpet cleaning process to remove all the embedded dirt and soil. Combining the dry and steam cleaning processes is the absolute best way of cleaning carpets when extremely dirty.

Ideally, your carpets should be cleaned every 6 to 12 months. By cleaning your carpets on a regular basis, you are protecting the health and safety of individuals and pets in your property by removing allergens and pollutants that will trigger allergies and cause respiratory issues as well as tiny sharp objects that will puncture the skin and cause injury. For safety purposes, you can remove small and light items that can easily break like vases, figurines, ceramics, porcelain, crystals, artwork, décor, antiques, heirlooms, musical instruments, lamps, lampshades, and other delicate electronics like laptops and smaller TVs. You can also remove children’s toys, small plants, and the different items used by your pets like food and water bowls, toys, and cages. You will not need to vacuum your carpets. We will do pre-vacuuming to remove loose dirt, debris, and dust in preparation for deeper cleaning.

Please make sure that your pets are always away from the technician during the cleaning process. You can attach them to a lead, place them inside an enclosed pen or kennel, or move them to a closed room.
